Kik Announces $38.3 Million Series C Funding, Acquisition of GIF Messenger Relay

Kik has just announced that it has acquired Relay, a leading GIF messenger, and raised a $38.3 million Series C round of funding. The addition of Relay is Kik’s first ever acquisition and not only enhances the company’s ability to be at the forefront of communication, but also further hints at Kik Interactive, Inc. CEO Ted Livingston’s statements about the company staying independent, while other app makers sell themselves off.

Kik now has more than 185 million users. Each day, more than 50 percent of active users share content with their friends, including photos, videos and mobile websites developed specifically for Kik, TruTower included.

The company recently launched Kik Promoted Chats, enabling brands to chat and share content with Kik users in a one-to-one setting, while tracking and optimizing their results.

“the Relay acquisition coupled with the recent funding puts us in a really strong position to dominate in chat”

“Today, mobile users aren’t searching for new apps – they’re looking for richer engagement in the apps they already have,” said Ted Livingston, Kik’s CEO and founder. “Chat is at the core of the mobile era, and the Relay acquisition coupled with the recent funding puts us in a really strong position to dominate in chat.”

“After being approached with a number of acquisition offers, it was clear that Kik was the best fit for us,” stated Joe Rideout, co-founder of Relay. “We’re extremely excited to join an independent messaging company with a similar culture and a broad reach, and we look forward to sharing our visual messaging technology with Kik’s users.”

“We’re extremely excited to join an independent messaging company”

As part of the acquisition, Relay founders Jon McGee and Joe Rideout will take key roles at Kik. Relay will discontinue its service on Dec. 15, 2014.

Separate from the acquisition, Kik has also disclosed a Series C funding round of $38.3 million led by Valiant Capital Partners with participation from new investors Millennium Technology Value Partners and SV Angel, and existing investors Foundation Capital, RRE Ventures, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures. This round brings total funding to $70.5 million to date.

Kik says it will use the Series C to invest in product development and further grow the company’s engineering and business development teams. As part of the Series C and in keeping with its philosophy of sharing rewards with all of its team members, Kik negotiated a secondary offering for all past and current employees.

Kik Messenger is available for all major mobile platforms.

Over 15 Billion Free Calls Have Been Made Over the LINE Messaging App Since 2011

LINE has just announced that over 15 billion free calls have been made using LINE free-call since its launch in October 2011. The service is built into the messaging app and shouldn’t be confused with the Line Call service that was launched earlier this year.

“Rapid growth of 3G and 4G networks” makes free calls “more and more important” for users

LINE is one of only a few all-in-one applications, giving users the ability to share stickers, photos, video and files while also enabling a high quality free-call service and a growing library of mobile games, though these games aren’t yet available on Windows PCs, tablets, or phones.

LINE added the PC version of free voice-call in December 2012 and Video-call in September 2013, ultimately leading to over 36 million free call sessions occurring daily on the LINE network.

“Thanks to the rapid growth of 3G and 4G networks in Europe, free-calls are becoming more and more important for our users.” said Sunny Kim, head of LINE Europe. “We are delighted to have hit the milestone of 15 billion free calls globally and look forward to continuing to provide our customers with high quality communication tools.”

LINE Free call usage stats, free calling service for LINE, Naver app

LINE is quick to point out that it has been fully committed to consistently improving the quality of its LINE-to-LINE voice call, video call and LINE Premium Call and continues to conduct research and experiments to ensure all services meet rigorous international standards, including ITU-T[1] recommendations. As a result of these experiments, LINE says its voice call voice quality improved by 120% between late 2012 and the first half of 2014.

LINE call quality improved by 120% since late 2012

This news follows the announcement that WhatsApp will be launching its own free voice calling service next year. Other apps — including Skype, Tango, Viber, and Facebook Messenger — also offer free calling through their apps. It will be interesting to see how other messaging apps respond as calling continues to become a standard part of the experience.

You can download LINE on most major mobile platforms.

TextMe Launches FreeTone on Android and iOS, Providing Free Calls and Text Messages to Any U.S. Number

TextMe launched FreeTone this week, an application that sidesteps traditional carriers and offers unlimited free calls and unlimited free text messages to any phone number in the United States.

Once the FreeTone app is installed, mobile users can call any phone number — land-line, cell phone, desktop/web number — send unlimited SMS, and share photos or stickers.

FreeTone includes Call Heads, a brand new feature on iOS that lets people comfortably talk while sending photos or stickers to their friends. Call Heads makes it easy and simple to personalize your communications and add more fun to your interactions.

Removing the “modern barriers to communicating”

“Our vision has always been to remove the modern barriers to communicating and provide people with universal and free communication options,” said Christophe Bach, CEO and Co-Founder of TextMe.

Describing this release as ‘a step change in the calling experience,’ Bach added: “With FreeTone, we have removed existing barriers to the calling experience on both iOS and Android. The user has complete freedom to reach out to anyone, anytime, via voice or text, and share images — at no cost.”

You do not need to earn or pay for calling credits; all you need is an Internet connection to call any US phone number for free, whether your friend owns a landline, cellphone or a smartphone.

The app is available for iOS via the iTunes App Store and Android via Google Play.

Voxer for iOS Updated With Easier Photo Sharing and Improved Navigation

If you’re using Voxer’s push-to-talk app on iPhone, you should have received an update to version 3.5.5, which brings a few notable changes to the instant voice communication platform.

First, Voxer says that sending photos is now easier, and allows you to seamlessly switch between sharing photos and sending text messages within the application. This should also make communicating with your Voxer friends, family, and colleagues quite a bit faster than was previously possible.

The new app also includes some improvements to navigation. You can now swipe horizontally to go back to the previous screen a la Internet Explorer for Windows 8.1.

Finally, the update also manages to sneak in a few other minor enhancements and bug fixes, but these are not broken down individually as is usually the case with these types of changes.

Download the new and improved Voxer here and post your thoughts on the latest update in the comments section below this article.

Skype Partners With Western Union to Bring Free VoIP Calls With Money Transfers

If you’re looking for ways to earn free Skype calls, look no further than Western Union. The money transfer service is giving customers who transfer money from a store $2 worth of Skype credit for international calls, giving you about an hour (depending on call rates) to communicate with a friend or family member far away. With each transaction, you’ll receive a Skype voucher code on the receipt with can be exchanged for credit through your Skype account.

Announced today, this is a great offer for students or business travelers abroad who might want to save a little bit on their global roaming carrier bill while also getting money sent to them. It’s also just in time for the holiday season.

This gives users an option to communicate, even if the other person only has a landline or feature phone

Even though Skype-to-Skype calls are free and there are quite a few other ways to get free calls, this at least gives you another option, particularly if the other person only has access to a landline or feature mobile phone.

The deal is effective immediately, and will run until April 1, 2015. You’ll have until June 30 to redeem your voucher for the free calls, which could provide a smooth transition to the summer travel season. It wasn’t specified if this offer was U.S. only, but I’ve reached out to Skype team to clarify.

Skype is available for most major platforms.

LINE Launches Challenge League With Its Webtoon Comic Application

Normally, we like to stick with just the messaging side of things, but a new LINE Webtoon contest has become an exception on our pages.

LINE Webtoon is a neat little app that allows you to enjoy webcomics on your smartphone, tablet and web browser, with apps available for both iOS and Android (Windows Phone users must use the web version for now). It’s another LINE add-on standalone service.

LINE has launched Challenge League today via LINE Webtoon. Challenge League allows artists to submit their webcomics for a chance to become an official LINE Webtoon artist and is being offered to webcomic fans and aspiring artists for free.

According to the press release:
To officially launch Challenge League, LINE Webtoon will host a $50,000 competition globally, to discover the best new webtoon artists. Anyone over the age of fourteen can participate in the competition by uploading a webcomic in English at www.webtoons.com/challenge. To be eligible to win the prizes, the content will be judged based on audience engagement, such as number of views and shares. Additionally, LINE Webtoon’s staff will evaluate the content based on creativity, originality and the artist’s ability to publish webcomics on a weekly basis. The prizes include two $5,000 third place prizes, a $10,000 second place prize and a $30,000 grand prize. The contest is free to enter and will run until January 25, 2015. The winner will be announced on January 30, 2015. LINE Webtoon will continue providing the Challenge League service on its official site after the contest.

“3.4 percent of LINE Webtoon artists are discovered through Challenge League”

“We have spent over ten years discovering and showcasing some of the best webtoon artists and content to our fans, and now we’re giving them the chance to become official LINE Webtoon webtoonists through Challenge League,” said JunKoo Kim, Director and Head of the LINE Webtoon Division. “Based on Challenge League’s popularity in Korea, where 73.4 percent of LINE Webtoon artists are discovered through Challenge League, we are excited to launch the competition globally and discover the next generation of webcomic artists.”

In sharing their creations, Challenge League artists can meet their audience and communicate with them within the LINE Webtoon service. LINE Webtoon also offers opportunities to recreate the webcomic across diverse media such as movies, TV series and more to expand beyond just webcomics. Some LINE Webtoon artists are earning up to $80,000 a month according to LINE.

LINE Webtoon launched in the U.S. and globally on July 2, 2014 and currently offers 53 webcomics, including multiple globally heralded series among the 520 original NAVER webtoons. LINE Webtoon users can enjoy multiple genres of webcomics, downloadable content, and notifications on new releases. LINE Webtoon also includes a rating system similar to that in most major mobile app stores.

Fans can access Challenge League by visiting http://www.webtoons.com. You can download LINE Webtoon via iTunes or Google Play. You can get the latest version of LINE app here.

Facebook Messenger Update Brings Focus, Lighting Adjustment, Send Message Fix

Facebook Messenger has released version 16.0 of its iOS application that lets you adjust the focus and lighting of photos you take in the app, hopefully providing a higher-quality photo-taking experience for users of Apple’s platform.

The new update is one that has been a long time coming for many users, who have instead opted to use the native iOS camera for snapping photos, and then uploading them through Facebook’s Messenger manually. So far, I haven’t been able to tell much of a difference, but be sure to let us know in the comments if you do indeed see a difference.

The latest update also fixes some issues with sending messages, so if you’ve ever had trouble with the messaging side of things, you’ll want to give it a try now to see if things have improved for you.

The new update is available for download via the iTunes App Store.

Have You Checked Out Viber’s Public Chats Yet? Listen to Your Favorite Celebrities

This week, Viber announced a new feature called Public Chats that expands the app’s capabilities beyond the simple instant messaging it’s known for and moves it deeper into the realm of social media.

Think of Public Chats as a way to “listen” to your favorite celebrities or any other interesting users to follow. Not everyone will be able to participate in the Public Chats, but you should have no problem listening. The conversations themselves, or “vibes,” will be viewable to the Viber-using public but it seems like the conversations will still be kept between friends.

Public Chats can be used as a platform to broadcast to the world at large but it limits actual personal contact to people you already know. It’s similar (but noticeably different) to WeChat‘s official accounts and Kik’s Promoted Chats feature.

Public Chats can be used as a platform to broadcast to the world at large

Already signed up to broadcast their “exclusive insider chats” are Anastacia, Pixie Lott, PerezHilton.com, Tyler Oakley, KISS, Van Dyk, the WWF, and NEXT Models, some of whom were announced today. Of course, the number of “vibes” you can follow will grow over time; Viber will be featuring the most popular “vibes” on the Public Chats home screen to help it avoid becoming crowded.

Viber hasn’t said when the feature will be available to all users; Public Chats is in beta right now. However, interested users can sign up here.

Restore Gallery Masterpieces By Collecting Their Fragments in the New LINE Trio Game

The LINE gaming platform continues to expand with LINE Trio, a new puzzle game released today for iOS and Android.

LINE Trio includes the same kind of wacky storyline that we’d expect from a LINE game. You take control of popular LINE character Brown (who takes the role of Detective Brown in LINE Trio) and must obtain all 20 fragments of masterpieces stolen by a villain named Phantom Thief X with your assistant Romeo. You’ll obtain these fragments (1 fragment per stage) by conquering a series of puzzles in match-3-or-more style.

LINE Trio, LINE app games, LINE messaging and calling app

Move the blocks up, down, left, or right and match 3 or more blocks of the same LINE character to pop them. Each stage has its own mission that must be cleared before you can progress to the next stage. By matching 4 or 5 blocks, you’ll be able to unlock special blocks that will help give you an advantage in the stages and will give you more points, so it’s a good idea to try and obtain as many as you can. You can have blocks lined up in horizontal or vertical straight lines or in L shapes, each of which contains its own special blocks to obtain. There are items you can use to help you along your way as well.

You can earn gifts based on how many friends you invite

Of course, where would a LINE game be without friends to join you? You can invite your friends to play LINE Trio and earn gifts depending on how many you invite:

  • 1 Invite – 1 Heart
  • 5 Invites – 2 Random Block items
  • 15 Invites – 3 Star Shot items
  • 25 Invites – 3 Line Plus items
  • 50 Invites – 100 Rubie

Begin your quest for the masterpieces by downloading the game via the iTunes App Store or Google Play. Be sure to download the latest version of the LINE app as well. Post your thoughts on the game in the comments below.

POP Messenger Brings Elegant Picture Chats to Your Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone

POP Messenger Brings Elegant Picture Chats to Your Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone

There are a growing number of messaging apps out there that can be found on all three major mobile platforms rather than just only two. If you’re looking for a way to message your friends no matter what platform they choose, POP Messenger could be your ticket.

POP Messenger, developed by Pinger, the same company who brought us great apps like GIF Chat, brings everything into full view; instead of putting everything in a smaller window, the app is full screen, so you don’t have the phone’s UI unnecessarily taking up prime screen real estate, even on iPads and Android tablets (no word yet on a Windows tablet/PC version).

If I had to describe POP Messenger with one word, it would be simple.

Using POP Messenger, you can chat with your friends using pictures from your camera, gallery or even the web. You can utilize the latter using the app’s built-in search function powered by Microsoft’s Bing search engine.

POP Messenger allows you to quickly customize your text by moving, twisting or sizing the text on top of whatever background you pick, whether it’s a photo or a web image. If you don’t want to use a picture in your message, you are able to use the on screen color picker to pick a background color and your favorite font, giving you a level of customization that isn’t present in most messaging apps.

After using the app for a few days, I’ve grown to enjoy it, though I still need to get more friends added (after all, any messaging app is useless without someone to chat with!). Some things worth noting is that POP may not be available in all areas yet, but will no doubt be expanding. If you can download it, though, it’s a highly recommended app that’s available for free via iTunes, Google Play, or the Windows Phone Store.

Albert Einstein-Inspired Stickers Now Available on the WeChat Messaging Platform

Stickers in messaging apps have become quite common nowadays, with WeChat, BBM, IMO.im, and others partaking. The stickers have not only become another way to communicate, but have also become a way for messaging platforms to monetize.

WeChat stickers, Albert Einstein stickers, emoticons and emoji

Some new stickers have just launched in the WeChat camp, stickers that are inspired by the immortal Albert Einstein. Called the Hey Good Thinking sticker set, the offering is just the latest of a growing number of stickers on the platform.

As WeChat describes the set:

While Albert Einstein, the character behind Hey Good Thinking, is known for his chops in math and physics, he’s also a shy guy who loves playing the violin and having fun! Whether it’s sipping drinks from a beaker or coming up with the next big theory, he knows the importance of maintaining a youthful spirit. But hey, it’s all relative, right?

The Hey Good Thinking stickers are now available to download in the WeChat sticker gallery on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, so be sure to get WeChat on your smartphone so you can procure them for yourself.

Yik Yak Messaging App Closes Funding Round, Company Valued at $300-400 Million

Yik Yak is an anonymous messaging application similar to cameoNet, Stealth Messenger, and other apps aimed at keeping user information and messages private, and it’s just finished a sizable round of funding.

According to the WSJ, the new round values Yik Yak at about $300-400 million and the new $62 million round of financing was led by Silicon Valley venture capital firm Sequoia Capital. This is the third round of venture capital fund-raising for Yik Yak in seven months, bringing the total amount of funding raised to about $73 million.

Jim Goetz, the partner who led Sequoia’s WhatsApp investment three years ago, is also apparently joining Yik Yak’s board. He had also invested in WhatsApp Messenger in 2011, which was then sold to Facebook earlier this year.

Unlike most messaging applications, Yik Yak takes things more local, allowing users to chat anonymously with one another based on location, and has won quite a bit of popularity with schools and universities.

Yik Yak is available on iTunes and Google Play.

With Nimbuzz’s New Holaa! App for Android, Users Can Block Unwanted Callers

After being majority bought by New Call late last month, Nimbuzz has been looking to expand amid large competition, and to that end has launched its new Holaa! app for Android.

Holaa! was created to help sidestep the large spam call problem in India, where Nimbuzz says up to 40 percent of calls are spam related. The app lets you identify unwanted callers as spam and upload the information to a central server. Think of it as a way to crowdsource a list of spam numbers to keep you from getting unwanted contact. Users of LINE‘s Whoiscall feature will see similar functionality here.

Of course the differences are subtle, with everything from Facebook and Google linking with contacts to missed call features and location information. Of course, the app also shows the contact’s photo, which is something you’d expect from a dialer such as this.

While the app is new, it’ll be interesting to see how Nimbuzz evolves it over time. There will also likely be other services created by the joining of New Call and Nimbuzz as well. As for Holaa!, you can download it via Google Play. There will likely be iOS and Windows Phone versions coming soon.

BlackBerry Announces BBM Ad Network Extension With New Global and Regional Partners

If there’s one thing that BlackBerry has been wanting to do for awhile, it’s monetize BBM. Sure, there are BBM’s stickers but that may not be enough for the Canadian company to give itself a huge boost.

BlackBerry has selected regional partners “that already have strong relationships with brands around the world as well as mobile advertising expertise”

In order to monetize the app further, the company has announced that they’ve entered into several new partnerships to expand their ad sales network and bring region-specific advertising sales expertise to BBM.

The new partnership will put the BBM advertising platform in front of brands, businesses, advertisers, and advertising networks. BlackBerry says that “BBM is uniquely positioned to capitalize on a mobile messaging market that is estimated to grow into the multi-billions in the next few years.” It’s looking to utilize its position with 90 million monthly active users to get a slice of that pie.

To help get things off to a good start, BlackBerry has selected regional partners “that already have strong relationships with brands around the world as well as mobile advertising expertise,” and will represent the BBM service where it has a “strong brand and large, active BBM audiences.”

BBM, BlackBerry Messenger, BBM ads

Blyk will represent BBM globally, with dedicated sales representatives in Chicago, Dubai, London, Singapore, and Toronto, while Habari Media will represent BBM with dedicated sales representatives in South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana.

So what will these ads look like? You can see a representation of a BBM ad in the screenshot on the left as it appears in a BBM Channel. BBM has also attempted to make sure the mobile ads “blend seamlessly” into the application and has made them a part of the Feeds, similar to what Facebook and Snapchat already do.

Within BBM, advertisers can place:

  • Sponsored posts, which place content in the user’s BBM feed where they can click to download an app or access more information. Sponsored posts in a social media news feed are the best-performing type of ad unit that exists. Early BBM campaigns have delivered industry-leading click-through rates.
  • Sponsored invites, BBM’s most native ad unit, offer brands a dynamic way to reach out to their most loyal customers, as well as to potential customers.
  • Sponsored sticker packs, which provide brands a new way of visually communicating their brand message within conversations and linking to products, services, and promotional offers outside of BBM.
  • Featured placements, which are the primary way for BBM users to discover new brands to follow in BBM Channels.

BlackBerry is quick to ensure that users know their data is safe and says that “at no time is personally identifiable information about any BBM user viewable by channel owners or advertisers.”

What do you think of BBM’s ads?

Samsung’s ChatON App Could Be Discontinued in Certain Markets Due to Restructuring

With Samsung‘s mobile profits waning, the company has reportedly been looking at restructuring its business, which includes cutting the number of new smartphones it puts out, and also axing services that are no longer profitable.

Unfortunately, one of those services could be ChatON, an app that we’ve been covering here on TruTower for quite some time. Apparently a major shut down isn’t what Samsung is looking at though, planning to give the service the axe in select markets while keeping it running in others.

According to the Korea Times, it would only be in markets where the service is not profitable, though no specific markets were named.

ChatON stands against a bombardment of other messaging apps that are vying for large user counts and even larger revenues. In a world with WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Viber, LINE, and WeChat dominating, it’s going to take a lot of work on Samsung’s part to make it big in the messaging space.

ChatON is available for most major mobile platforms.

LINE Creator’s Market Exceeds 36 Million Sticker Pack Sales With 270,000 Sticker Artists

Stickers have become a big part of many messaging apps and the latest numbers from LINE show just how lucrative the business is.

According to LINE’s announcement via press release, over 270,000 creators from 145 different countries have registered with its Creator’s Market and the top 10 ranked sticker sets have achieved an average of JPY 36.8 million (about $310,000 USD) in sales, with the top 30 ranked sticker sets achieving an average of JPY 23.6 million, the top 100 an average of JPY 13 million, the top 500 an average of JPY 4.6 million in sales, and the top 1,000 an average of JPY 2.7 million. As many users continue to purchase sticker sets, the pace of this growth is accelerating even now, half a year after the service launched in April.

LINE app stickers, LINE Creator's Market, LINE news

In total, close to 36 million sticker packs have been bought from the Creators Market, Line said, that’s from a total base of 270,000 creators. LINE sticker creators retain half of the revenues from their sales.

LINE Creator’s Market stickers are available only to Android and iOS users. LINE has not revealed when Windows Phone users will get access to the feature, though these users can still register to create stickers.

The LINE app itself is available for most major mobile platforms.

Tango Releases New Options for Privacy Conscious Users on iOS, Android

Online privacy is a big thing with everyone nowadays, and a number of communication apps have taken it upon themselves to provide policy and security upgrades to make users feel safer.

For instance, in addition to secure apps like Threema, there were also some security enhancements rolled out to WhatsApp to ensure both security and privacy for its users.

Tango provides you with more ways to customize what you share

Now Tango has hopped on the privacy bandwagon with its apps on iOS and Android by providing you with more ways to customize what you share with your Tango friends. These new options include:

  • Receive friend requests: While we encourage making new friends on Tango, we still would like to give you the ability to turn on or off friend requests with this additional option
  • Who can see my post: Previously, we’ve allowed you to choose who can see your profile. With these new updates, you get even more personalization by being able to choose who can see your status updates and posts. Select “All” for your posts to remain public or select “Just my friends” for your posts to be shown only to your friends.
  • Do I show up in search: Here you can select whether or not your profile shows up when someone searches for your name within the Tango app.
  • Find me via mutual friend: Sometimes Tango will recommend you to someone if you have a mutual friend, but you can now choose to turn that option on or off.
  • Friends list visible to friends: If you’d like to keep your friends list private to other members, you can choose to do so with this option.
  • Game notifications: We realize that only some people on Tango play games. If you don’t want to receive game notifications, then you now have the option to turn those on or off with the toggle button.
  • Show recommended friends: To turn off Tango’s ability to recommend friends to you in your address book, simply adjust this option.

You can view these options under the Privacy settings menu in the latest version of Tango.

Samsung Confirms ChatON Application Will “Continue to be Offered to Consumers Worldwide”

With earlier reports indicating that Samsung was planning to axe its popular ChatON messaging app, the company has proven the reports false.

In a statement to the Verge, the company stated:

The recent rumors concerning ChatOn have been false, as ChatOn will continue to be offered to consumers worldwide.

Though it does have 100 million users — it’s not specified whether these are registered or active — there are many who consider ChatON more bloatware than anything. The service is one of Samsung’s non-profitable services and so the reports would not have surprised anyone had they turned out to be true.

Of course, next to WhatsApp, WeChat, and a host of other messaging apps to choose from, many of which have many times more users than ChatON, it’s difficult to say whether the app itself has a truly long term future, let alone a profitable one.

ChatON is downloadable on most smartphone platforms.

Are you a Samsung ChatON user? If so, what makes you choose it over other apps? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks Emily for the tip!

LINE Removes 15 Third-Party Games From Its Social Gaming Platform

If you’re a big fan of Sonic Dash S on the LINE gaming platform, you’ll be sad to discover that it and 14 other 3rd party games have been removed by LINE.

The target=”_blank”>announcement came just this morning and represents the second time this year that the platform has undergone the “spring cleaning.”

The reason for the removal? The company said the games were closed to “focus its resources on titles that are enjoying greater growth in order to further propel the service as a global gaming platform.” They’ll focus on games such as LINE Dozer and the just-released LINE Trio.

The LINE gaming platform launched in November 2012, and the company said this month it had accumulated 470 million downloads on its gaming platform this month.
