Stickers Depicting Basketball Superstar Shaquille O’Neal Arrive on BBM

If you’re a basketball fan or you’ve even heard of the sport (or you’ve seen the movie Shazaam), you probably know who Shaquille O’Neal is. The basketball superstar has just become a BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) sticker pack.

The new set will set you back $1.99 and is now available in the BBM Sticker Shop.

There are also quite a few other sticker sets in the BBM Sticker Shop that have been added in the last few months, many of which we’ve covered here, and more stickers are being added to the BBM arsenal every week or so. Garfield stickers were added at the end of last month, and there’s also a thanksgiving set in the BBM shop as well to give you a leg up on the upcoming holiday (or, if you’re Canadian, a reminder).

You can download the new stickers here (via). You’ll also want to make sure you have the latest version of BBM on your device (iOS, Android, or BlackBerry).

What do you think of BBM’s latest sticker addition?

DormChat Brings Location-Based, Anonymous Messaging to College Students

There are a lot of messaging apps out there (here’s an extensive list) so DormChat a messaging app aimed at college students that provides location-based and anonymity-optional messaging, is not without competition.

The app has been available for iOS for a few months now and has recently launched on Android while also announcing a funding round for an undisclosed amount from ff Ventures Capital in New York, with ffVC’s John Frankel joining its board of directors.

Users can create chatrooms based around topics and locations in which anyone within a three mile radius can post. Users have the option of remaining anonymous, though users must create a profile that requires a university email address (i.e. trutower@university.edu).

Users can not only join a chat, but they can also post updates using either a profile or an anonymous handle, discover local news as it breaks, and connect with students nearby,

Over 200 colleges around the world are already signed up for the service, so you may want to make sure yours is one of them.

This type of open forum could help connect more people and allow for things such as open door scheduled events or just meeting new people.

DormChat is available for free on iOS and Android.

LINE POP 2, the Sequel to the Hit LINE Game, is Now Available for iOS and Android

LINE has just launched the sequel to its popular LINE POP game, a match 3 puzzle game that garnered over 47 million downloads globally on iOS and Android.

LINE POP 2 brings a new hexagonal shape to its game boards, providing new challenges for fans of the original game, which retains its cookie look and feel. Thanks to the new hexagon play, the blocks can be moved in six directions — up, down, or four directions diagonally — rather than simply up and down and across. Move the blocks and join three of the same character to clear them. You’ll have a limited number of moves to clear each level.

There are a larger variety of special blocks in LINE POP 2:

In addition to clearing blocks in rows of four of five, clearing them in V, X, or Y patterns will produce even more powerful special blocks. Clear these special blocks and watch them do their magic! Use special blocks strategically to achieve some pretty impressive results.

Clear the blocks around the Waffles to destroy them, but beware of the Honey blocks that absorb other blocks!

Each level has a mission and you’ll have to accomplish that mission to move to the next level. After clearing 15 to 20 levels, you will proceed to the next chapter.

Ready to play? Download LINE POP 2 via Google Play or iTunes for free. Also, be sure to check out other games for LINE app as well.

More than 20 Million Messages Sent on MeetMe Social Network in a Single Day

MeetMe, a popular application and social network for meeting new people, announced that it set a new daily record yesterday for the number of user-to-user chats, crossing 20 million chat messages sent in a single day for the first time in the company’s history.

The company, formerly known as myYearbook, also recently launched a new design on iOS and Android, which it says makes it easier and faster to access messaging, with potential chat partners displayed immediately upon entering the app. Tabs replace “drawer”-style menus and help users easily and instantly switch between features as well as receive notifications.

“[MeetMe] doubled [its] number of chats … in six months”

“We doubled our number of chats from 10 million to 20 million in just six months. It took us nine years to reach 10 million chats and then only six months to reach 20 million,” said Geoff Cook, CEO of MeetMe. “We’ve never seen higher engagement on the MeetMe platform. I believe the new redesign of the MeetMe mobile app will help us drive growth even further. We released the redesign to a limited number of users earlier this month. Today it is available to all iPhone and Android users.”

The MeetMe app can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android. Are you sending one of those 20 million messages a day?

New Call Purchases 70 Percent Stake in Nimbuzz Messaging App for $175 Million

In a bid to invest in the hot India technology space, UK-based New Call, a provider of fixed line and broadband services, has purchased a 70 percent stake in Nimbuzz Messenger valued at $175 million.

This proves what I was saying last year about consolidation in the messaging industry, with Facebook’s purchase of WhatsApp, Rakuten’s Viber acquisition, and Alibaba’s investments in Tango as other indications.

New Call’s purchase values Nimbuzz at $250 million

New Call’s purchase values Nimbuzz at $250 million. Nimbuzz broke even as far as financially, but expects to be profitable in the last quarter of this year with sources of income such as voice services, mobile ads and stickers increasing revenues. The entire staff, which will include CEO Vikas Saxena, will be part of the deal.

Nimbuzz has been growing steadily over the past few years, with most of its user base in the Middle East and India. The company recently partnered with Aniways to bring “more intelligent emoticons to its chat application. Nimbuzz is also one of the few calling and messaging apps that is available across virtually all operating systems.

Switzerland-Based BBee Launches Indiegogo Campaign to Make International Calling Cheaper

There are already a lot of apps and a growing number of global carriers that can help you make low-cost international communication possible, but a startup out of Switzerland called BBee thinks it can go above and beyond the offerings of apps like Skype or Rebtel.

BBee, which is currently on Indiegogo, says it’s offering international and local calls at a rate that is 50 percent cheaper than anyone else on the market. Instead of billing by the minute like most apps, BBee bills by the second, which could potentially save you some coin if you, say, have 50 seconds remaining out of a minute when the call ends.

The campaign is described in this way:

The goal of the crowdfunding campaign is to offer people minutes in exchange for a “donation”. In reality the funder will be getting minutes at a huge discounted rate. All funders will receive minutes 50 percent cheaper than what they are paying now and of course if your recipient of the call is online; The call is FREE!

Of course, to make the service work, backers are needed, and that’s where Indiegogo comes in. BBee is offering donors an exclusive package with which to enjoy the app, so if none of the global carriers or calling and messaging apps are fitting the bill for you, you can check out BBee’s Indiegogo page to donate or for more information.

WhatsApp Messenger Had Revenue of $15 Million With a $232.5 Million Loss

For the first time ever, Facebook disclosed financial results of WhatsApp for the first time today and it wasn’t all rainbows and pearls.

In 6 months ending June 30th, 2014, WhatsApp garnered $15.921 million in revenue, but had a net loss of $232.5 million, $206.5 million of which was share based compensation expense and issuance of common stock below fair value. The company actually only spent $13.5 million in the first half of the year for normal operations, which would have netted a roughly $400,000 gain.

Last year, WhatsApp had $10.2 million in revenue with a net loss of $138.146 million. Net cash used in operating during this period was only $9.9 million.

Facebook also broke down what it was paying for when it bought WhatsApp earlier this year:

  • $2.026 billion for the user base
  • $448 million for the brand
  • $288 for technology
  • $21 million for other
  • $15.314 billion for “future growth, from potential monetization opportunities, from strategic advantages provided in the mobile ecosystem from expansion of our mobile messaging offerings”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has continued to state that it was more interested in growth before monetization as it hopes to continue positive growth, maybe even hitting 3 billion users at some point in the future.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum and Zuckerberg want to grow WhatsApp to lock out its growing competition and then once it’s solidified its position as the world’s top messaging application, that’s when the monetization can begin.

Do you think WhatsApp will be able to reach 3 billion users?

Voxer Appliance Brings Secure, Real-time Voice, Instant Messaging Deployments to Government Organizations

Voxer Appliance Brings Secure, Real-time Voice, Instant Messaging Deployments to Government Organizations

Voxer has long had a strategy surrounding business, but recently, it has started to lean toward government organizations. Its first foray into the government sector came with recent innovations at NASA in which astronauts were testing Voxer in a submerged environment, which indicates that the walkie-talkie app could eventually be used on Mars or beyond.

Today, Voxer has launched Voxer Appliance, which is designed to enable government organizations to deploy the Voxer service over their own networks.

Irv Remedios, President of Voxer, told TruTower in an interview that the service “can be configured to provide government organizations the ability to create their own network with their own internal devices.”

“Voxer’s innovative application allows our government customers to communicate”

Voxer Appliance helps ensure end-to-end security and gives government organizations the ability to determine how, when and where their user information, voice and text data are stored, accessed and maintained. All communication between clients and Voxer Appliance is encrypted using TLS.

“Integrated, secure, and easy-to-use communication solutions are key to enabling the success of the government’s mobile workforce initiatives,” said Michael Shrader, vice president of Intelligence and Innovative Solutions at Carahsoft. “Voxer’s innovative application allows our government customers to communicate through high quality live and recorded voice messages, as well as multimedia messages, using their mobile devices.”

“Voxer’s appliance elegantly solves many of the critical shortfalls and potentially deadly frustrations previously inherent in tactical communications and provides reliably networked operations even in communications-austere environments.” said Peter Dixon, CEO of Second Front Systems, a national security accelerator bridging the divide between the high-technology and public sectors. “For organizations and agencies that operate at the point of action, the Voxer appliance is welcome relief for a decades-old problem set.”

Voxer Appliance includes Voxer Business Manager software, Android, iOS and web browser clients

The Voxer Appliance includes Voxer Business Manager software in addition to Android, iOS and web browser clients. Windows Phone support is not yet available, with most of the demand on iOS according to Remedios, but as demand increases, so does the chance that Voxer Appliance will expand to other platforms.

“The introduction of the Voxer Appliance is further demonstration of our commitment to give government organizations the tools they need to connect instantly, regardless of device type, OS or network,” said Irv Remedios, president of Voxer. “With growing numbers of government agencies adopting Voxer to enable real-time communications, ensuring deployment flexibility and secure manageability is more important than ever.”

Real-time communication with extra security

Voxer Appliance is based off of Voxer’s own hosted services. “We deliver updates on a periodic basis,” Remedios told us, though these updates will be rolled out less frequently than Voxer’s mobile application. Voxer Appliance is in essence the same Voxer we all know and love, only it’s kept within a private network with heightened security. It even has the same core features.

Voxer is available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

KnowRoaming Sticker Now on Sale, Takes a Daring Swing at Roaming-Induced Bill Shock

TruTower readers are very familiar with KnowRoaming. It’s a SIM card sticker with one purpose: to knock out roaming charges for overseas travelers for good.

Following a successful 12 month pre-launch and beta period, KnowRoaming Ltd. today announced the availability of the KnowRoaming SIM sticker directly from www.KnowRoaming.com for $29.99.

The KnowRoaming SIM sticker automatically connects all unlocked GSM iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices, including tablets to local wireless provider SIM cards. This gives users access to reduced voice, data and text roaming rates that the company says cuts up to 85% off of roaming charges.

Along with the sticker’s general availability, KnowRoaming announced its unlimited data packages and KnowRoaming Long Distance:

KnowRoaming Unlimited: An unlimited data package that provides KnowRoaming customers with unlimited data in 55 countries for $7.99 a day.

KnowRoaming Long Distance: A service enabling long distance calls from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and South Africa to over 200 countries and territories on all locked and unlocked GSM phones. Calls are made through the phones native dialer over a voice network, rather than wifi or data networks, resulting in better quality, a seamless experience and lower costs than traditional long distance or wifi based calling plans and services.

“[KnowRoaming] allows you to stay connected while traveling without having to swap out SIM cards”

“The sticker technology together with our unlimited data bundles allow you to stay connected while traveling without having to swap out SIM cards or count megabytes,” said KnowRoaming CEO Gregory Gundelfinger. “Since our beta-pre-launch efforts last year, we’ve had thousands of people testing the technology and providing us with valuable feedback and today I am proud to announce that we are now ready to open sales to the world!”

Finally, the company announced the Enterprise Management portal as well, which is a portal enabling the enterprise management of multiple KnowRoaming accounts. IT, accounting or other managers within an organization can create and manage post or pre-paid accounts for employees.

“Corporations have hundreds, if not thousands of employees traveling around the globe at anytime,” continued Gundelfinger. “The costs associated with keeping those employees connected and doing business are astronomical with traditional roaming solutions. KnowRoaming provides a seamless, cost effective solution for any enterprise.”

“costs associated with keeping employees connected and doing business are astronomical with traditional roaming solutions”

Customers apply the KnowRoaming sticker to their SIM card once and download the KnowRoaming iPhone or Android app (Windows Mobile users access a mobile web app) to create an account, load funds (via credit card) on to their account, enable phone settings to prepare for travel, track usage and purchase a local number in the country they are traveling in. With KnowRoaming installed, customers can receive all incoming calls from their home SIM, display their home number to whomever they call while traveling abroad and more.

KnowRoaming is only active when the phone leaves its home country and remains completely dormant when at home. Users who purchase a local number in the country they are traveling in are still available on that number(s) when at home via their home SIM.

The KnowRoaming SIM sticker is available today for $29.99 on KnowRoaming.com, including free shipping to the United States and Canada. Anyone who activates their KnowRoaming sticker within two weeks of receiving it receives a $15 KnowRoaming account credit.

Saving Your Chat History on BBM for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry

You might find yourself in a position where you want to save your chat history in BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), whether it’s to save an important business message, or a special message from a friend or family member. Luckily, whether it’s on Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry, the process is quite simple.

First of all, you’ll want to make sure you have the latest version of BBM downloaded onto your device.

On BBM for Android and iPhone, once you’ve opened BBM, you’ll want to tap the menu button (three vertical dots) and hit Settings. Now, simply switch the option that says Save Chat History to the ON position.

Windows Phone users tap Menu (three horizontal dots) and then tap Settings. Next, navigate to Chats and set the Save Chat History option to ON.

BlackBerry 10 users have a similar way of doing this as Windows Phone users. Open BBM and swipe down from the top of the screen. Next, tap Settings and then Chats. Finally, set the Save Chat History option to ON.

Doing the above will ensure that you’ll be able to keep your precious chat memories on file for a later time. It’s important to note that BBM for all of the above operating systems can show up to 10,000 message for each contact at this time.

Don’t Want the New Blue Ticks in WhatsApp Telling Contacts You’ve Read The Message? Here’s a Workaround

Yesterday, it was revealed that WhatsApp Messenger had launched new “blue ticks” that would show contacts when messages are read, and many users felt that this was an invasion of their privacy. A few users wanted a way to turn this off.

Well, there is actually a way to do it in WhatsApp Messenger, but it’s not very convenient. It requires you to turn off your data connection every time you want to read a message privately. When you get a new WhatsApp message, don’t open it right away. Instead, leave it unread and proceed to your phone’s settings. Turn off both your connection to the wireless network and WiFi. After you’ve insured that any kind of connection to data networks is turned off, you can then proceed to open the message and read it. You can restore the connection once you’ve exited WhatsApp.

WhatsApp message symbols, check mark symbols WhatsApp, WhatsApp message status

Doing this with the data connection off will keep the other user from knowing that you’ve read the message. Instead of turning blue, the check marks will remain non-colored like normal.

Does this work for every operating system? It should. Give it a try and post your experiences in the comments below.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Why Facebook Forced Users to Install Messenger Separately

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Why Facebook Forced Users to Install Messenger Separately

The company has just recently conducted its first public town hall Q&A, with Mark Zuckerberg front and center. The first question he was hit with is why Messenger was separated from the main Facebook app, a change that was not easily accepted by the online community.

“Why did you force us to install Facebook Messenger?”

“We think that messaging is becoming increasingly important”

“Asking everyone to install Messenger was a big ask … we really believe that this is a better experience,” Zuckerberg said. “We think that messaging is becoming increasingly important.”

Zuckerberg added that with “each app we wanted to focus on doing one thing well.” With “more than 10 billion messages are sent everyday on Facebook” it was important to have a “dedicated messaging experience” that allows for a faster experience.

In some ways, the separation does make sense, but many users still feel that it was an unnecessary change. There are a lot of messaging services out there, and Facebook Messenger now ranks at the top with WhatsApp, another Facebook property. Facebook acknowledges that different types of users exist and, in order to serve those best, the only way to move forward would be to separate messaging and social networking activities into apps of their own.

Watch the full Q&A with the Facebook CEO in the video above. The Messenger question, the first in the Q&A, hits right about the 5 minute mark. You can get the latest version of Messenger here.

Facebook Claims 500 Million Users on Its Standalone Messenger Application

It’s no secret that Facebook’s division of Messenger from its main social networking app caused quite a stir among the Internet community.

Just last week, the social network’s CEO explained the reasoning behind the division and it looks like things might be paying off for Facebook after all.

Today, Facebook revealed that more than 500 million people monthly are using its Facebook Messenger app despite the heavy backlash. This is up from about 200 million monthly users back in April, when Facebook first revealed its numbers. This also, of course, does not include WhatsApp Messenger, an application that Facebook purchased earlier this year.

While some disliked downloading a new app, others welcomed messaging without the distraction of the full Facebook experience. Still, Facebook Messenger is not without a slew of messaging competitors so having at least half a million users on two of its messaging apps is a big win for Facebook and any plans it has for Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp down the road.

Tango Signs First Developers Onto Global Games Fund as it Expands Its Popular Gaming Platform

Tango today announced that it’s signed its first six game developers as part of the company’s $25 million Global Games Fund, which was first announced back in July at Casual Connect and has since garnered more than 200 applications from developers.

Tango’s international lineup of top developer teams from China, Sweden and the United States includes Falafel Games, Planeto and Shiny Shoe Games, among others.

The Tango Global Games Fund will be working to expand Tango’s gaming platform, offering mobile game developers a unique game distribution model that includes promotion through non-Tango app marketing channels.

Within the app, meanwhile, game developers will be able to reach Tango’s 250 million members through native ads, chat notifications, Tango Channels, as well as being listed as a feature game.

Tango “tripled” its in-house publishing team to support platform growth

“The developer partners we’re announcing today are a testament to the high caliber and diversity of teams that we’re working with. This is exactly what we were hoping for and we are excited to start launching great mobile games on the Tango platform,” said Jim Ying, Tango’s vice president of games publishing. “To help drive the growth in our games business, and to provide the best support for our game developer partners, we’ve tripled our in-house games publishing team.”

Tango app iphone, Tango games, Tango apps

Three of the six in this initial round are close to soft-launching their titles with Tango:

  • Planeto, based in Sweden, is working on a trivia strategy game that combines the feel of classic board games with the fun of answering trivia questions. The developer team specializes in quiz and trivia games and was founded in 2009.
  • Falafel Games, a team focused on creating games for the Middle East, is releasing a soccer-themed card battle role playing game with an innovative trivia-based battle system. The company has been producing and publishing web and mobile games since 2010 and specializes in mid-core massively multiplayer online (MMO) games.
  • Shiny Shoe Games is based in San Francisco and is at work on creating an exciting match-three puzzle game inspired by movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Mummy. The small independent mobile game developer has been building original games since 2011.

This isn’t the first milestone Tango has reached in gaming. The messaging company launched its third-party SDK in June of last year to enable APIs and social features such as leaderboards, Tango friend lists, gifting and game invites for developers.

Developers who are interested in learning more about the Tango Global Games Fund should visit www.tango.me/global-games-fund.

MeetMe Pushes Growth Momentum of Its Social Application on iOS and Android

Social company MeetMe has announced that the MeetMe app has reached its highest US rankings in the last year in both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

As of November 12, the MeetMe Android app ranked 13th in the Google Play Store Social category and the MeetMe iPhone app ranked 26th in the App Store Social Networking category.

“We believe our improved ranking … is the result of organic growth stemming from our new mobile design”

The social app has done pretty well in other countries as well. MeetMe now ranks 16th in India, 18th in the United Kingdom, and 22nd in both Italy and Turkey, up from, respectively, 35th, 32nd, 73rd, and 88th one year ago. MeetMe ranks in the top 100 Social applications in 45 countries in the Google Play Store and in 90 countries in the Apple App Store.

“We believe our improved ranking in the Social categories on both iPhone and Android is the result of organic growth stemming from the successful launch of our new mobile design and continued progress in facilitating chat engagement for our users,” says Geoff Cook, CEO of MeetMe. “Our apps are available in 12 languages, and we are encouraged by our recent international traction in user growth. For example, in October nearly half (48%) of all MeetMe registrations on Android came from outside the US, up from 22% a year ago. We look forward to continuing to expand MeetMe within the US and throughout the world as the pre-eminent mobile chat app for connecting with new people.”

The app is available on iOS and Android but still lacks a Windows Phone app despite high demand from users.

German messaging app cameoNet is now available as an iOS App for Phone und iPad in the iTunes App Store. The app was released on Android in mid-October and will also be coming soon to Windows Phone, Windows 8, MacOSX and Linux.

cameoNet offers full end-to-end encryption, which means messages, photos, videos, voice messages and other files can be securely transmitted. It uses the algorithms RSA-2048 Bit and AES 256. Therefore, messages are protected from external access or decryption attempts, and even cameoNet itself does not have access to the messages, which should prevent governments from attempting to access private data via the company’s servers.

“We not only wanted to offer secure and encrypted communication but also enable simple and comfortable usage.”

cameoNet is open source and is publicly available in order to assure its users that there are no built-in backdoors to allow secretive snooping.

“User requirements and needs continuously drive the development of our Multi-Messenger,” Michael Merz, founder and CTO said about the messenger. “We not only wanted to offer secure and encrypted communication but also enable simple and comfortable usage.”

In addition to end-to-end encryption cameoNet offers a variety of other features, including:

  • Multi-Channel: Messages and files can be sent via cameoNet, e-mail oder text messages.
  • Multi-Identities: One account allows you to manage different separate identities. Private and business matters can be managed with one app bit are completely separated for an external viewer.
  • Multi-Platform: cameoNet can be used on the smartphone, a tablet or a desktop device.
  • Multi-OS: cameoNet can be used by devices on any operating system via web access. Native apps are currently available for iOS and Android and will soon be available for Windows Phone, Windows 8, MacOSX and Linux.
  • Multi-Device: Users can use cameoNet on multiple devices. The messages and files are then fully synchronized between the different devices.

You can download cameoNet on your iPhone and iPad via the iTunes store.
